Must Visit Stationery Stores in Tokyo

I’ve always loved journalling and scrapbooking, so when I was in Tokyo, I made sure to put time aside to find the best stationery stores to visit. Let me tell you—stationery shopping in Tokyo is next-level. Many of my favourite Japanese brands are so much more expensive in Canada because of import costs, so I’ll admit, I may have gone a little overboard on the hauls.

Be sure to set aside at least 2–3 hours for each store. Because trust me, you’ll need the time to explore. If you’re a stationery lover, you’ll likely discover so many new brands to fall in love with. The stores are packed with endless options—think notebooks, stickers, stamps, pens, and so much more. It’s really a stationery lover’s dream.

One of my all-time favourite notebook brand for journalling is Midori Paper. And Traveler’s Factory is one I truly adore for their customizable notebooks. If you’re curious about my haul and some of my favourite stationery products and brands, please let me know, and I will share all about it with you!

Whether you love all things paper and its’ accessories, or if you’re looking for a unique gift for your friend who loves stationery, here are five must-visit stationery stores in Tokyo that you cannot miss.

5 Stationery Stores in Tokyo Not to Miss

1. Itoya Stationery in Ginza

There are many Itoya shops across Japan, but if you’re in Tokyo, you have to visit their flagship store in Ginza. This is one of the largest stationery stores with an impressive 12 floors, 8 of them are fully dedicated to stationary. Each floor has a unique theme—so whether you’re on the hunt for notebooks, agendas, fountain pens, or even paints, you’re bound to find what you’re looking for here.

In terms of shopping experience, I feel that they would have everything you would want to look for. At each floor, they provide a shopping bag to help you carry your finds while you shop. They do encourage you to pay for your items on each floor, but you are able to take your purchases to another floor as you’re looking around. One thing to consider is that I did find certain items were cheaper at LOFT, so their prices could have been a bit more competitive in my opinion.

I spent 3 hours here in total and honestly would have stayed longer if I didn’t go near their closing time! Starting on the first floor, I made my way slowly through each aisle, determined not to miss a thing. It can be fairly busy here, so at times it was difficult to navigate certain aisles. There is just so much to look at and sometimes it can all feel a bit overwhelming. But I found that bringing your Airpods while shopping in the dense Tokyo city makes the shopping experience quite enjoyable. Despite that, I would still highly recommend you visit Itoya Stationery and it’d put it on the top of your list of stationery stores to visit in Tokyo.

2. Kakimori

Kakimori is a must visit if you’re looking for something unique to add to your daily writing rituals . It’s also a great place to create customizable notebooks. The store’s inviting and calm atmosphere allows you to immerse yourself into each writing tool.

One thing that’s unique about Kakimori is that all their pens and paper products are out for you to try before purchase. So don’t do what I did, which is come 1 hour before closing time. I did not have time to explore all the different pens and paper samples they laid out around the store! I don’t have too much experience with fountain pens, so I felt I needed more time in the store to learn more about them.

Kakimori offers a variety of water based pigment ink and fountain pens to customize and try out. If you’re really into water based ink, you can reserve a space in their workroom to create a custom ink colour of your choice with the staff.

There is also a whole section in their shop where you can customize and create your own notebook too. You don’t need a reservation for this except for the weekends. There’s an entire wall where you can choose your own notebook cover, paper, bindings and fasteners. You can mix and match all the different types of paper that they offer and really customize your own notebook.

Knowing this know, when I come to Tokyo again, I’ll make sure to give myself time to be able to customize my own notebook!

3. LOFT

LOFT is another one of my go to stores in Japan for all things stationery. They have an extensive collection of notebooks, agenda’s, stamps, pens and more. Even if you only have time to visit this one stationery store in Tokyo, I think you’ll find what you need here. I found their prices are quite reasonable and they also offer tax free for visitors.

LOFT stationery store in Shibuya

They not only sell stationery but have a variety of lifestyle products, home goods and more. You can expect multiple floors to explore, so be sure to take your time when you’re here. It’s the perfect place to find some unique gifts to take home with you. There are many LOFT’s in Tokyo and the one in Shibuya was my favourite location.

4. Traveler’s Factory Nakameguro

Traveler’s Factory is a stationery lover’s dream. This store is so charming, complete with everything you would need to inspire your creativity during your travels. What’s unique about the Traveler’s Factory notebook is that it’s actually quite a simple notebook, but fully customizable to your personality. Just as you have the creative freedom when writing in each page of your journal, you can build your own notebook from scratch. Their notebook is designed with the traveler in mind, with the intention that you’ll bring it with you to collect memories from your trips.

5. MUJI – Ginza Flagship Store

If you’re in love with the MUJI pens, make sure to stock up at the flagship store in Ginza. The stationery products are located on the 4th floor. In addition to the stationery products, I’m going to also highlight how crazy this flagship store is. You’ve got 6 floors of MUJI related products. The first floor is where you’ll find a cafe and bakery (which I highly recommend you checking out), as well as a grocery store. Women’s clothing is on the 2nd floor and the health and beauty products are on the 3rd floor. The 4th floor is where you will also find the home goods and tax free counter.

MUJI stationery store

I honestly thought I was going into MUJI to quickly to grab some stationery, but little did I know, I spent 3 hours in here exploring each floor. The 6th floor was incredible and I would recommend you check it out. You’ll find the MUJI hotel, a coffee bar with a seating area, MUJI bookstore and art exhibit space. The art exhibit was a highlight for me and I’m so glad I stumbled into this floor. The exhibit that was set up in Sept 2024 was called ‘Mother’ and it was free to the public. It was incredibly touching and made for a great day out shopping.
