BTS Ep 01. How I Started a Podcast with a Stranger
As most of you know, I love sharing the behind the scenes work, as I find that it tells even more of the story than the final project does. In these BTS series, I’ll be sharing a glimpse of what went on behind each episode to inspire you to start whatever it is that you are hoping to create.
Two strangers find each other on Instagram — they follow each other, support each other on every post and eventually one of them (Jay) proposes a crazy plan on DM: "let's start a podcast together". On the other side of the world, in a completely different timezone, Steph agrees (??!!) and thus, "We Should Have Coffee" is born. This is a space where we build each other up: as kind strangers on the internet, as a community, as internet besties, and perhaps most importantly: as women supporting women.
Jay and I met through our shared passion as creatives on instagram. We’ve never met each other, but we’ve been supporting each other post after post. I felt as though I could really connect with Jay through her visual storytelling that she shared on her instagram. Her posts were inspiring, insightful and so creative. There was a shared unspoken connection as women supporting women and this is the conversation that started it all:

5 reasons why I started a podcast with a stranger:
- to challenge myself to do something uncomfortable & get out of my comfort zone
- to be spontaneous, open to new adventures + trying new things
- to create something that doesn’t yet exist – learn how to transform my daydreams into reality
- to share my voice more, develop & refine my public speaking skills
- to find like minded individuals who think like me, who are driven like me, and be a part of a community that builds each other up

As we put our ideas into motion, day by day we would chat through instagram, sharing our ideas for what this podcast could look like. And today is our first meeting! I honestly couldn’t even sleep the night before because I was so excited about the creation of our podcast (& meeting Jay for the first time!). We planned to run through a practice recording, ensuring our studio set up worked and that we were ready for production.
From podcast topics, recording schedules, and vetting out the details of how to create a podcast – we talked about it all! It was so nice to finally sit down and have a virtual coffee chat with Jay. Since Jay is from Australia and I’m from Canada, we would often miss each other due to the time zones and I’d have to wait another full day to chat with her! We got to know each other a little bit and had some amazing ideas for the podcast.

December 29, 2023 – Recording day!!
I spent a couple hours prior to our meeting setting up my camera, ring light and ensuring that the new microphones that I purchased were all charged and ready to go for the podcast. We had our set up perfect our first meet up, but of course today we had some tech issues. My camera would not connect and our internet connection was poor this day.
So every 5 minutes or so, one of us would freeze up on the screen which made our conversations and recording more challenging. Jay would be speaking but I wouldn’t hear any of it so we’d have to repeat the question or repeat what we said all over again!
Despite all of that, we just batch filmed 3 episodes of our podcast!! Our conversations came so naturally, we really had a lot of chemistry together! We went all in recording from 3:30 pm to 10:00 pm MST. Insane, insane, insane!!!
Final Thoughts & Reflections
I believe that if you don’t know where to start, you should just start anyways. We didn’t exactly have all the details of how to create a podcast, but we did it anyways. As you keep creating, you’ll be learning new skills, refining your vision/voice & figuring out along the way what ✨ feels ✨ right for you.
I’m so proud of the both of us and most importantly we had so much fun creating and producing together. I can definitely feel Jay’s excitement and passion behind this and it gets me motivated too. It’s so refreshing to get to know someone you’ve just met. The deep conversations of getting to know one of your best girlfriends is one of the best kinds of friendships out there.
Through the creation of our podcast together, we hope to bring you some warm laughs, thoughtful insights and good company as we navigate 2024 together.
